Staffing Myths BUSTED!

Since opening in 1993, Dahl Consulting has experienced numerous changes in the way we help people find jobs, due to the dynamic employment landscape. With hundreds of new regulations and numerous periods of growth and recession over the past decades, it’s easy to see why there might be some confusion around how a staffing firm or recruiting agency’s role fits into the mix for job seekers. We’ve compiled a list of the most common misunderstandings people have about staffing and recruiting to help separate myths from facts.

(Note: The responses within this article apply solely to our own company practices, however much of the information holds true for the majority of staffing firms and recruiting agencies in the U.S.)

MYTH 1 | Staffing firms charge candidates a fee to help them find a job. FACT: Sometimes candidates are wary of staffing firms because they believe there’s a fee for employment services. DAHL’s recruiting services, along with the majority of other staffing agencies, are 100% free to applicants or employees. Staffing firms do not make a profit from job seekers; instead, we are hired by client companies to help them find quality employees.

MYTH 2 | A portion of your hourly wage or annual salary is taken out for the recruiting agency. FACT: No portion of an employee’s paycheck is withheld and allocated to DAHL.

MYTH 3 | Temporary work is a waste of time. FACT: Temporary or contract work can provide an invaluable bridge to regular, full-time employment. You can use temporary work as an opportunity to try out a prospective employer/workplace and demonstrate your skills for the job. Plus, for individuals who are looking to supplement their income or have a variety of working schedules in their life, temporary or contract work is a great solution. Many people even prefer temporary work because it can provide a flexible work schedule that helps them better manage a healthy work-life balance.

MYTH 4 | Staffing firms can always find someone a job. FACT: Staffing agencies want to put as many people to work as possible – it’s mutually beneficial! However, sometimes a candidate is deemed ineligible for hire due to a number of variables. Staffing firms take into account your work experience, job skills, and schedule, among other things. One thing to remember, though, is that not all staffing firms have the same eligibility rules. If you can’t work for one, try out another.

MYTH 5 | Recruiting agencies sponsor international job seekers to come to the U.S. to work. FACT: While DAHL is an equal opportunity employer and hires candidates from a variety of countries of origin, we cannot accommodate international job seekers’ travel or assist in the process of gaining legal work certification in the United States. This is beyond the services that most staffing firms provide, however there are many other resources online to help international job seekers.

MYTH 6 | A staffing firm can’t find me a permanent position. FACT: While it’s true that many of the positions recruiting agencies hire for are temporary or contract work, a substantial number of those employees who started in a short-term assignment are often hired on for full-time, permanent positions. In fact, according to the American Staffing Association, one-third of temporary employees were offered a permanent job by a client where they worked in a short-term position, and two-thirds of them accepted the offers of permanent employment.
